MRCPCH FOP TAS: All That You Need to Know About Applying for The Exam

MRCPCH theory exams are held three times every year in the UK and overseas. Read on to understand when and how to apply, what times they start and finish, what to bring on the day and what to expect after the exam.

The MRCPCH FOP TAS exams are taken on a computer. Most candidates will take the exam at a test centre. Candidates can also apply to take the exams via online invigilation.

Theory Exams

There are three theory exams namely, MRCPCH Foundation of Practice (FOP), MRCPCH Theory and Science (TAS) and MRCPCH Applied Knowledge in Practice (AKP).

Get An Exam Account

Log in to or create your RCPCH account. Once logged in, go to My account and follow the links to register for exams. You will be prompted to complete a short form to demonstrate you are eligible to take these exams. You can apply for an exam during an application period.

Applications for test centres only are open from 6 November to 19 November 2023. Eligibility for online invigilation has changed. Applications for online invigilation are open from 6 November to 10 November 2023.

Some Quick Tips for Applying

You have to register for your exam account at least 10 working days before the application period opens. Registrations are not processed during the application period. Make sure that you book the correct test centre while applying online. Transfer to an alternative centre is impossible.

Exam Delivery

MRCPCH FOP TAS exams take place in test centres across the UK and in other countries. Each test centre has a fixed number of places. Select your preferred centre from those that are hosting the exam and that have available places.

There are two options for taking the exam. You can sit the exam at a test centre with social distancing. You also have the option to attempt the exam at home or another private location with online invigilation. Due to local restrictions, this option is not available in Egypt, Sudan and the United Arab Emirates.

Applications are accepted on a first come, first serve basis, and only before the closing date. Once an application is confirmed and paid, transfers between test centres/online invigilation are not possible.

Timings Of the Exams

MRCPCH FOP TAS are held on the same day. FOP is held in the morning and TAS in the afternoon. You can apply to sit both examinations on the same day or apply to sit either FOP or TAS separately.

Exam Fees

The exam fees differ from country to country. The fees are the same for both delivery options. Be it a test centre or online invigilation. You will need to pay online using credit card or debit card for all countries except Hong Kong. The card should be linked to a UK bank account. All fees are processed in UK Pounds and are subject to currency fluctuations.

Bank drafts and cheques are not accepted. Bank drafts and cheques are scanned and processed electronically and the paper originals destroyed. This is done as a result of the changes within the UK Banks Clearing System. In the event of a payment issue, bank drafts and cheques can’t be returned. The funds would not be processed either.

Applying For the Exams

You can use the online system to apply for the exam. Paper, email or faxed applications are not accepted.

Before You Start

Make sure you are registered for an exam account. This has to be done at least 10 days before the application window. You are allowed to apply only during the application period. This is usually one week or longer.

The application period always opens at 09:30 GMT (local time in the UK) on the first day and closes at 16:30 GMT on the last day. Use Google chrome rather than Internet explorer. It is better to use a desktop or laptop computer instead of a mobile device.

Exam Dashboard and Application Form

You need to log in to your account first. On your account, you need to go to the Exams panel. Follow the links to apply. Your exam dashboard will be initially displayed.

It will show your qualification progress. It will show which exams you need to sit and whether you have sat and passed each. Exams that you may apply for when the application period is open are also displayed.

You may then select the method of delivery (test centre or online delivery). Lastly, select the location in which you wish to sit your examination.

Complete The Application Form

Make sure that you read all the information carefully. Try to complete all fields as fully as possible. Click through the application form to pay via debit or credit card after completing all forms and declarations.

Your place will be reserved for 10 minutes while you complete your application and payment. Your draft application will be removed after 30 minutes. You will have to restart your application after that.

Payment And Confirmation

Once the payment is received, the exam place is confirmed. You can make an online payment by credit card or debit card linked to a UK bank account. An email is sent to confirm your place.

Check your spam or junk folder if you cannot find this email in your box. An admission document with full details for your test centre will be emailed four weeks before your examination day.
