Paediatric healthcare is evolving rapidly in the current era, and the demand for skilled professionals is increasing day by day. Memberships and fellowships in paediatrics help you stay ahead of the curve by equipping you with the latest knowledge and skills. In this blog, we’ll decode MRCPCH and FRCPCH , two prestigious qualifications awarded by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), UK . Let’s break down their differences, similarities, and everything else you need to know.
MRCPCH
MRCPCH stands for Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. It is a postgraduate qualification awarded by the RCPCH to paediatricians aiming for career advancement and clinical excellence. This qualification is achieved by passing a series of structured exams designed to assess theoretical and practical knowledge in paediatrics.
The examination is divided into three parts:
Theory Exams
Candidates often sit FOP and TAS together, but they are separate exams and all theory exams can be taken in any order.
Clinical Exam
MRCPCH Clinical is an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) that consists of 10 stations. This exam rigorously tests a candidate’s clinical knowledge, communication, and professional skills in practical, real-world scenarios.
Achieving MRCPCH proves that the candidate possesses the knowledge and skills necessary to practice paediatrics at a high level and is ready for more advanced training or independent clinical roles.
FRCPCH
FRCPCH, or Fellowship of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, is an honorary postgraduate designation awarded to paediatricians who have demonstrated substantial expertise and leadership in paediatric healthcare. Unlike MRCPCH, FRCPCH is not obtained through an exam. It is awarded based on professional standing, experience, and contributions to the field.
There are two pathways to obtaining FRCPCH:
Fellowship by Registration:
Available to paediatricians who are listed on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register for Paediatrics in the UK.
Fellowship by Election:
This route is for senior paediatricians who may not be on the GMC register but have made significant contributions to paediatrics. Applicants are nominated and elected by existing fellows based on merit.
