What is the FOP/TAS examination, and who is it for?
FOP (Foundation of Practice) and TAS (Theory and Science) are two of three theory exams of the MRCPCH, the paediatric membership qualification from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH). Each has 100 best-of-five questions in 2 hours, and both can be taken on the same day.
- FOP tests clinical knowledge of common paediatric conditions.
- TAS tests the basic science, physiology, pharmacology and evidence-based practice behind clinical care.
They are meant for doctors starting or planning a career in paediatrics, typically from the end of foundation training. Passing FOP, TAS and AKP (the third theory exam) is required before you can apply for the MRCPCH Clinical exam.
In what order should I take FOP, TAS and AKP?
The three theory exams can be taken in any order, and you don’t need to pass one before attempting another. Most candidates sit FOP and TAS first, often on the same day, and AKP later in training. All three must be passed before you can apply for the MRCPCH Clinical exam.
Can I take the exam online, or do I have to go to a test centre?
Either. The MRCPCH theory exams are computer-based and can be taken at an approved test centre or online with remote invigilation. Check the RCPCH website for the options available in your country.
When can I take the MRCPCH FOP/TAS exams, and how many times a year are they held?
The MRCPCH FOP/TAS exams are held three times a year, typically in February, June and October. Application windows close around two months before each exam, so apply early. Check the RCPCH website for the latest dates.

What is MRCPCH?
The Membership of the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health is a prestigious PG certification from the RCPCH, the governing body of Pediatricians in the UK. Recognised worldwide as a leader in Child Healthcare, their coveted certification is considered a stepping stone for global medical practice, as well as higher specialty training, etc. It consists of three theory papers and a final Clinical Examination test. The certification is divided into MRCPCH Foundation of Practice (FOP)/ Theory and Science (TAS), and MRCPCH Applied Knowledge in Practice (AKP), which they take in whichever order they prefer, as well as an in-person MRCPCH Clinical Examination. The Clinical Examination consists of 10 different stations ranging across Short Clinical, Development, History, Communication, and Video stations.
