The Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (MRCPCH) is one of the most recognised postgraduate paediatric qualifications in the world. Designed to assess the knowledge, clinical skills, and professional competencies required for modern paediatric practice, MRCPCH is pursued by thousands of doctors globally every year.

For international candidates, the qualification offers significant career advantages, including enhanced professional recognition, access to specialist paediatric training pathways, and opportunities for career progression in multiple countries. Understanding the MRCPCH eligibility requirements, examination structure, and availability of MRCPCH exam centres outside the UK is an important first step for candidates planning their MRCPCH journey.

In this blog, we will guide you through everything you need to know about the MRCPCH pathway and how StudyMRCPCH can support candidates throughout their preparation.

Understanding the MRCPCH Exam Structure

The MRCPCH qualification consists of three theory examinations followed by the MRCPCH Clinical Examination.

Foundation of Practice (FOP)

The Foundation of Practice examination tests your understanding of core paediatric principles and your ability to apply problem-solving skills in clinical situations.

Theory and Science (TAS)

The Theory and Science examination focuses on the scientific concepts underpinning paediatric medicine, child health, disease mechanisms, and evidence-based clinical practice.

Applied Knowledge in Practice (AKP)

The Applied Knowledge in Practice examination assesses clinical reasoning, interpretation of data, and decision-making skills expected of paediatric trainees.

MRCPCH Clinical Examination

After successfully passing all three written examinations, candidates become eligible to sit the MRCPCH Clinical Examination.

The Clinical Examination assesses:

  • Professionalism
  • Communication with children and families
  • Clinical examination skills
  • Practical paediatric decision-making
  • Real-world patient interactions

The Clinical Exam is designed to evaluate whether candidates can apply paediatric knowledge safely and effectively in clinical practice.

MRCPCH Eligibility Criteria

Understanding MRCPCH eligibility is essential before beginning the application process.

MRCPCH Eligibility for FOP, TAS and AKP

As there is no sequential order for the MRCPCH theory examinations, the eligibility requirements for FOP, TAS, and AKP are identical.

Candidates must:

  • Hold a valid Primary Medical Qualification (PMQ) from a recognised institution.
  • Possess a PMQ that makes them eligible for GMC registration in the UK.
  • Ensure that overseas medical qualifications are recognised by the General Medical Council (GMC), UK.

MRCPCH Eligibility for the Clinical Examination

Candidates must:

  • Have passed all MRCPCH theory examinations.
  • Have completed a minimum of 2.5 years of postgraduate training.
  • Have at least 12 months of emergency paediatric care experience within the last five years.
  • Have completed six months as a house paediatrician or an equivalent six months in emergency paediatrics.
  • Obtain confirmation from two senior supervisors or colleagues regarding readiness for the examination.
  • Pass the Clinical Examination within seven years of passing their final theory paper.

Meeting the required MRCPCH eligibility criteria ensures candidates can progress smoothly through the examination pathway.
