The FOP (Foundation of Practice) and TAS (Theory and Science) are two of the three theory examinations you need to clear in order to earn the ‘MRCPCH’ title. The FOP/TAS used to be called MRCPCH Part 1A and Part 1B, respectively. If you are a doctor aiming to make a successful career in the field of paediatrics with this globally recognised MRCPCH qualification, it is essential to understand the exam format and key preparation strategies, as it will help you plan your preparation effectively and improve your chances of clearing these primary hurdles confidently.
You can take both exams on the same day. FOP is conducted in the morning, followed by TAS in the afternoon. Whether you are planning to appear for the exam in October 2025 or planning to take it in the next year, this blog will help you get a clear idea of these exams.
MRCPCH FOP/TAS: A quick overview
The RCPCH conducts FOP/TAS exams three times a year, usually in February, June, and October. There is no sequential order for taking MRCPCH theory exams (FOP/TAS, AKP). So, you can take it in any order.
Foundation of Practice (FOP)
The FOP exam mainly tests your ability to apply clinical knowledge, make decisions, and understanding of paediatric practice. It aims to ensure that a candidate meets the standard expected of someone entering core specialist training.
- Duration: 2 hours
- Exam mode: Computer-based
- Number of Questions: 100 single best answer (SBA) questions
The questions will be focused on a specific aspect of clinical practice. For example,
- Select the most likely diagnosis from the following
- Select the best treatment for each of these children
- Select the organism which matches most closely each of the following case scenarios.
The FOP paper also forms a part of the Diploma of Child Health (DCH) examination.
Theory and Science (TAS)
This exam focuses on the scientific foundations of paediatrics. It assesses understanding of basic scientific, physiological, and pharmacological principles, along with their application to evidence-based clinical practice.
- Duration: 2 hours
- Exam mode: Computer-based
- Number of Questions: 100 SBA questions
Each question tests a specific area of applied science, and it follows the same question format as in the FOP exam.
Proven strategies to clear MRCPCH FOP/TAS
Understand the syllabus: Visit the official website of RCPCH and go through the syllabus of the theory exams. This will help you focus on high-yield topics and understand the weightage given to each section.
Practice with question banks: Practicing regularly with reliable question banks improves familiarity with the SBA format. Analyse each question to know the reasoning behind correct and incorrect answers.
Study in an integrated manner: FOP and TAS exams overlap in certain areas. So, try to integrate clinical and scientific concepts while studying. For example, understanding the ‘why’ behind each clinical scenario strengthens your knowledge and its application.
Simulate exam conditions: Taking timed mock tests will improve your speed and accuracy. Also, it is a great way to build stamina for attempting both papers on the same day.
Revise smartly and focus on core concepts: Focus on revising important clinical guidelines, normal values, and common paediatric conditions in the final phase of preparation. Avoid going through new study materials close to the exam day. Instead, reinforce what you have already studied.
So, that’s all about the MRCPCH FOP/TAS examination. According to the official RCPCH website, candidates are expected to dedicate around 150 to 200 hours of preparation for each paper to cover the syllabus thoroughly.
