It is considered as a golden standard for MBBS graduates aspiring to specialize in Paediatrics and child health.

The MRCPCH consists of four separate exams, with the OCSE/Clinical being the final hurdle. In order to appear for the MRCPCH clinical exam, the candidate must clear the three theory examinations first.

MRCPCH clinical examination is conducted in a hospital where the candidate will need to perform circuit of 10 scenarios/ stations. Trained examiners, who have extensive experience working with paediatrics, will be present in each station to assess the performance of the candidates. Some of the scenarios would normally involve young people or adults acting like children.

5 common mistakes to avoid

  • Neglecting structured communication

Effective communication is paramount in paediatrics. This is vital for gathering accurate information, formulating diagnoses, and ensuring patient compliance with treatment plans. You can improve the communication with patients by creating a comfortable environment, using age-appropriate language, and engaging both the child and their parents.

  • Overlooking time management

Each station has a strict time limit. Spending excessive time on one aspect can compromise your performance in others. Regularly practicing under time-limit conditions can help you develop a sense of pacing and ensure you address all components of the station.

  • Inadequate clinical examination practice

A thorough and systematic approach to clinical examination is essential. Inconsistent techniques or missing key findings can negatively impact your assessment.

  • Ignoring feedback

Pay attention to the feedback from your supervisors and colleagues, and use it to improve your performance.

  • Ignoring professionalism

Professional demeanor is integral to patient care. Demonstrating respect and maintaining composure under pressure are qualities that examiners value.
